Exercise is an important part of staying healthy and in fact, the Bible has much to say about how we should treat our bodies. So many Christian women are hesitant about taking care of themselves and are wondering whether exercise should have a place in our lives, but as we are reminded in 1 Corinthians 6: 19-20 “Do you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been purchased at a price. Therefore, glorify God in your body." Making our bodies strong and healthy is a way to honor God and glorify in his gifts! Combining faith with fitness can be done by making sure that we pursue God while we’re working out, and by ensuring that our intentions for exercising are in line with our Christian faith. Here’s how to pursue fitness while pursuing God.

Focus on the Godly reason why you’re getting fit

One of the most common weight loss mistakes people make is that they’re getting fit for all the wrong reasons. Most women try to shed a few pounds to fit into the latest fashions, while others are doing it as a way to compete with and look physically better than other women. As Christian women, we should focus on the Godly reasons why we’re getting fit: to be healthy, to live a longer life, to be physically stronger so we can take care of our loved ones, and have more energy so we can continue to serve God even though we’re living a busy lifestyle.

Dress wisely in public

Some workout clothes can be too revealing. Lack of modesty is one of the things that a Christian woman has to guard against, even when we’re working out. As we’re reminded in 1 Timothy 2:9, “I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes.” To dress modestly for your work out, embrace pants with a straight leg and a slight flare at the bottom instead of skin-fitting designs that are so popular today. You should also avoid baring your midriff and wear a long shirt that covers your bottom whenever you work out.

Workout to upbeat, Christian music

Most of the music that is playing in gyms all over the country nowadays are too raunchy or contain offensive lyrics. To pursue fitness while pursuing God, exercise to upbeat, Christian music. Download a workout playlist to your phone or iPod and workout to your music. It’s a great way to be reminded of your purpose for exercising and also a way to keep Jesus with you while you’re getting stronger and healthier.

Whether you choose to work out in a gym or in the convenience of your home, make sure to follow these tips to pursue fitness while pursuing God. Working out the Christian way helps us to remember that Christ is at the center of everything that we do as we lead an abundantly healthy life.
