TV Host Molly Argue

Most of us wouldn’t consider chatting with Tyra Banks, Christina Ricci, Chad Michael Murray, or Isabela Moner to be “work”, but for Molly Argue, it comes with the job description. As a TV host for Young Hollywood, Molly can have as many as three celebrity interviews a day — and she’s definitely not complaining. This bright, passionate, and curious gal loves what she does, and her enthusiasm for her work is just as evident offscreen as it is on. Chances are, you’ll never see her without a smile on her face and a question on her lips.

Let’s get to know Molly!

How did you get into hosting?

Well, I went to school at Pepperdine University and I’ve been in California ever since, so for about six years now. The plan wasn’t always to stay in California, though. Truthfully, I thought I’d go elsewhere upon graduation, but God works in funny ways sometimes. Things just worked out for me here. Before I graduated, I was offered a job with a fashion and travel blogger. When we first met we discussed the idea of building, curating, and launching a fashion app, so we worked to put the project together and she became the first blogger to have her own travel app - it's shoppable too! I loved this business experience and traveled quite a bit during that time for research... We worked together to cover 15 cities for the app and the best things to do, eat, shop, wear, and places stay in those cities.

It was a great job and I loved what I was doing, but I knew that it wasn’t my "calling."  I had a moment where I realized that if I continued to put my dreams on hold to help build someone else's dream (even if I believed in it!), it would just become harder and harder to launch my own career. So, I started working to create my own path in hosting from there.

I always knew broadcast was where I fit... I grew up hosting the school announcements and always volunteered for public speaking. I ask a lot of questions and I love people... so hosting is natural for me. I truly enjoy it! They say you are doing the right job when a 14 hour day of work is FUN! (And IT is.)

Tell us about a typical day in your life!

Well, every day is different — and that’s what’s interesting! Some days I wake up and my schedule’s completely clear and I have to think about how I’m going to spend my day to make my tomorrow better or to make me better tomorrow. Then other days are the complete opposite. If I have an interview the next day, for instance, I usually spend at least two hours researching the person I’m going to interview beforehand, and stalking them on social media. It sounds silly but you can learn so much about someone from their Instagram page! This is especially true with the younger talent. I love interviewing Disney stars and teen stars, and there’s so much on their social media feeds that clues you into their unique personalities and things you can play off of in the interview.

On days when I have an interview, I’ll get up early, try to workout, eat a decent breakfast, finish preparing, go into the studio, have a great interview, and then it’s over and onto the next thing! Of course, throughout the day I also spend a lot of time keeping up with emails, and at night I work on keeping up with social media (which you have to do these days), and then I read a little before bed. And (hopefully) I’m in bed before midnight.

What makes for a good interview?

You can never control how an interview’s going to go, and sometimes I’m talking to someone who’s been up since 4:00 a.m. and has been to five other interviews and the last thing they want to do is to be sitting down and talking to me. But being as well-rounded and overall prepared for an interview is the best way to make sure that it will go smoothly. I try to make sure I really know the talent or person I’m interviewing, their backstory, and a few funny, personal things… I interviewed a girl once who was really scared of styrofoam and I threw that in the conversation and she was like, “How did you know that?! Nobody knows that! Where is that on the internet? I need to take that down!”

Most memorable interview?

It’s funny because when you meet somebody, everyone’s just a normal person. The person I was probably most starstruck to meet was Tyra Banks at Beautycon, though. She taught me how to smize and was so wonderful and professional and well-spoken. She just had this presence about her that was so in-control, so that was really cool to see.

Dream interview?

There are so many talented people I would love to interview, but right now I’m really interested in bloggers and influencers. I think it’s so crazy that bloggers and influencers are sometimes being viewed as bigger celebrities than some of the mega celebrities we grew up watching in movies! I’d love to interview them and find out who they are, because it’s so easy to show your life on social media, but who are you as a business person? Who are you when you’re sitting in bed editing your Instagram photos? Who are you as a person as opposed to as a talent or influencer or blogger?

Health and fitness tips?

In terms of diet, I think everyone always feels best when they are treating their bodies well, but I need moderation. I eat healthy when I can, but I can’t rule out carbs completely, or not have a glass of wine on the weekend, or piece of chocolate cake on my birthday! As far as fitness, I do love working out. I’m hooked on SoulCycle. I can’t do it more than once or twice a week because it is so intense, so I like to mix that with walking. Living in West Hollywood, I walk everywhere. One of my girlfriends from Pepperdine and I even meet once a week and walk six miles in the morning.

What about faith?

I grew up very Catholic and and to this day, I still feel very at home when I’m in a traditional Catholic church and attending mass. Attending Pepperdine opened my eyes to other ways of celebrating in church, though, and I feel so grateful for that experience and the people I encountered there. In high school I had a sense of self and knew what I wanted to do, but going to Pepperdine - a place with such a positive faith support network - let me figure out exactly who I was, and that’s something that I take with me now.

Faith is so important in what I do. The entertainment industry isn’t easy. At all. You’re told No 100 times before you’re told Yes. I know that sounds a little cliche, but I don’t think people realize how true it is and how much it affects you. You get one awesome job and people are like, “Oh that’s so cool!” But, to get that one Yes, I went through a 100 No’s that nobody saw. Instead of telling myself I’m a No, though, I have to realize that God had a better plan for me and a better Yes down the road. And when I look back at the opportunities that didn’t work out and the ones that did, it just becomes so clear that we’re all here for a specific reason and everything works out how it’s supposed to.

Future plans?

Five years down the line, I hope to have a more steady position (if there’s even such a thing!) within the world of hosting and I hope to do it as much as possible because it’s a job that I love. I also hope that I’ll be married and thinking about kids. In this business I’ve learned to take it day by day, though. I just signed with a hosting agent, which I’m really excited about. I kind of feel like I’ve narrowed my vision in the world of hosting. I love travel, fashion, lifestyle, entertainment, and beauty, and so now that my vision is laid out in front of me, it’s just a matter of moving forward and seeing what clicks.
