5 Bible Verses to Encourage Writers

I am a firm believer that God blesses each one of us with a talent unique to our design. For some, it may be drawing or painting, while others may have been gifted with the art of public speaking.

Are you the one everyone calls when they need a birthday cake? Can you take one look under the hood of a car and know exactly what work needs to be done? Whatever your ability, it was God who decided you would be the one able to carry out His works in that manner.

For me, I was blessed with the ability to articulate myself with a pen and paper. I have used my talents for good through my online blog described in my bio, but I have also used my talents for evil (well…evil maybe in the eyes of my former employer) in a couple negative emails. (C’est la vie.)

Regardless of the talent God gave us, we all need some encouragement in cultivating and nurturing those skills. As a writer, I often think about whether, in the big grand scheme of things, my words actually matter. I wonder if people take home the message I am trying to share. I mull over the importance of written words that may not involve a medieval fantasy with a plot twist. And I struggle with writers block almost weekly.

Today, I am sharing five Bible verses that prove just how important a writer is in sharing God’s word. I also am sharing the best way I have found to beat writers block. Let’s dive in!

5 Bible Verses For Writers

1. “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies – in order that in everything God may be glorified through Christ Jesus. To Him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.” – 1 Peter 4:10-11 (ESV)

I think the first thing we must do is recognize that we have been given a talent to use for God’s will. Out of all His children, He wanted YOU to be the one to write and bless others through the power of words. What an honor that is!

2. “Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” – Revelation 21:5 (ESV)

This is just one of many verses that show how God uses writers for His purposes. Of all the ways God communicated with His people, He often chose writing! Many were charged with the task of transcribing His words so that His teachings could be passed on and shared. Writing is an important gift and always has been.

3. “For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.” – Romans 15:4 (ESV)

I like to think of this verse in a different context. Even though Christians, through Jesus Christ have been released from the law of the Old Testament, it doesn’t mean that those chapters aren’t valuable. It doesn’t mean there isn’t something to learn and apply to our everyday lives contained within those books. Those verses are timeless. When you think about it, isn’t that what we as writers want to do? Write a book that stands the test of time? A book that no matter what year it is, people can always find value within its pages. To me, this verse is an excellent reminder that it is possible, and it is important to write things that will be referenced to for generations to come.

4. “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Write in a book all the words that I have spoken to you.” – Jeremiah 30:2 (ESV)

To me, this is just another great reminder of the importance of transcribing and putting the words God places on your heart onto paper. Stories are meant to be passed on throughout the years to come. Christ did just that by ensuring that his disciples used written words to share the good news for future generations. I can’t think of anything better to leave those who come behind you than your truths and the stories of the world through your eyes.

5. “My heart overflows with a pleasing theme; I address my verses to the king; my tongue is like the pen of a ready scribe.” - Psalm 45:1 (ESV)

This verse just paints the most vivid scene in my mind. I picture someone just ready, pen in hand, prepared to spill all the details of the story to his/her reader. I just envision someone with so much to share! But what if you got nothing? What if you are struggling with “writers block” and can’t seem to tap into your creativity? I believe God gives us all our creativity and ideas in hopes that we do something inspiring… something great… something that honors Him. That may look like encouraging someone; sharing personal stories to give hope to others; serving others so that they might be successful; really the list is endless.

Well, as Christians, there is no better way for our enemy to attack us than through spiritual attack. And if we are using our gifts for good, then you best believe you will see and experience a lot of barriers and roadblocks along the way. There is nothing Satan wants more than to ensure your message and writings that bring love and hope to others never see the light of day. You will find yourself distracted, uninspired, busy, and floating further and further away from God. There is honestly no better way to break your mental block than by stepping away and indulging in prayer, meditation, and God’s word.

Your business, your book, your blog, whatever will be there when you come back. I promise. He will renew your spirit. He will inspire you. He will dismantle your block brick by brick.
