The Definition of Love

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away” 1 Corinthians 13:4-8

This question came up at our girls bible study and now my dad and I are working through answering it.

What is the definition of love?

There are many things that people can consider to be love, it can even be confusing at times to understand what is and what is not love. To me however, love is:

Someone who sticks with you through thick and thin. Someone who never leaves your side but never hurts you (mentally or physically). It is someone who knows your past and is still helping you write your future. It is someone who constantly is encouraging you and always allows you to be yourself(no matter who you are around). It is someone who cries with you when you are sad but they celebrate with you when life is going right. They make you feel at peace and help you grow into the person you want to be.

I have my family and many friends who I love dearly. People who I would do anything for. However, no matter how hard I try, the only person who can truly love is God. The only person whose love never fails, is God. The only person I can always count on to show me love is God. Do you see the pattern here?

God shows me grace every single day. He gave me everlasting love. I always know he is looking out for me, keeping me safe and showing me peace. He is never not there.

It is so easy to get caught up in worldly love. From trying to find your “perfect match”, even though God has the right person in line for you. Going from person to person, just to feel “love”. Or loving a certain television show. Many things can make us feel loved, or we think we love. We might love a certain restaurant or a certain shoe but, sometimes that love falls through. We move on to a new tv show, or our taste buds change. The thing is though, God never loses his love for us. It is constant. It is always there and never leaves. No matter what we do. There is nothing you can do that would make God love you less. For one, he loves all of us the same. No one person is better. I know a lot of the time we judge people or we think being rich makes you better but, in God’s eyes, we are ALL the same. He loves us all the same. Two, as long as we ask for forgiveness, God will always forgive us. He keeps NO record of the wrongs we do. Something you did four years ago is gone, it is no longer something you have to feel guilty for. When we go to God, when we ask for forgiveness, God forgives us. He does not have a list of every time you asked for forgiveness. He does not look at you any differently because of the things you have done. He does not have a list of all the times you have sinned. Now that, that is true love!

Many times people think they are too far gone, many times people think that God has no room for more people, when in reality, God wants you to come to him. He wants you to come home, he wants to show you love. True love. Not love that will eventually fall out or get less, love that is everlasting and never changing. When we are tired of running, God gives us rest. When we are tired of carrying our burdens, God takes them all. When we feel alone, God gives us a great big hug and reminds us that we are not alone. The world often becomes too much for us. Oftentimes, we end up feeling like we are not enough for this world, or for the people around us. God has called us enough and has given us a home. There is no love that is greater than the love he shows for us.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16

Never forget how truly loved you are. That God gave his only son, so that we may live and be loved. Imagine giving up a child, how hard that must’ve been. God did it so effortlessly because of how great his love is for us. Never forget how much you are needed. God put a purpose in your life and this life is to follow God’s plan. Never forget how much God has given us and how we should not be afraid to live for him in public. Never forget that God’s love NEVER fails, you can go to him 24/7 and he won’t keep a record of your wrongs. You are loved, my child. Never forget that.

“I love you, my child.
You are a masterpiece of my work.
Molded and put together by my hands.
Nothing can come near you,
And nothing will break you.
I love you with my whole heart.
Nothing you do will make me love you any less,
And no one will make me think of you any less.
You are my child.
You are my difference maker.
The one who will teach my name.
The one who will show others my grace.
You might get lost along the way,
But always call out,
And I will pull you back in.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
I am always here and never leaving your side.
I love you, more than you know.
So go show others my love.
Go fight for me like I have fought for you.
I am your rock.
When people throw you down,
Oh my love, I will pick you back up.
Don’t be afraid.
Don’t be ashamed.
I will love you always.
And never not be proud of you.” - God
