Staying Rooted in ✝ on Social Media

The Lord speaks about living truthfully and full of praise, and social media is a wonderful avenue to share His love. I definitely want to note that I am not an expert – I have many imperfections, I am so hard on myself at times, and I am always learning, but I pray we can take these truths and wisdom from our Creator into our day to day, and even tuck them in our back pocket for when we need a reminder in the incredible days to come that He's paved before us.

Enjoy these tips to keep Christ at the forefront online and in "real life!"

View Others as Inspiration and Gifted rather than Competition or Comparison

This is not only important to remember in the social media world, but also in everyday life and relationships. We are all victim to comparison and fall short in so many ways of wanting someone else’s life, wanting to one up your friend, and over time – getting a competition mindset instilled in us that is aggressive and vindictive. I encourage and remind myself that everyone was wonderfully made individually by the Lord and we all have different gifts to bring to the table. I think we can learn so much from one another, lift one another up with grace and humility, gain inspiration and motivation, and even new life tid-bits from taking the time to listen to their story.

Galatians 6:4-5 – Pay careful attention to your own work, for then you will get the satisfaction of a job well done, and you won’t need to compare yourself to anyone else. For we are each responsible for our own conduct.

2 Corinthians 10:17 – But, “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”

Be Mindful in What You Post and Your Intentions

It’s not about us – remembering this focus is so tough sometimes with a “focus on yourself” saturated society. This life we were given is not our own. We are His, and we are called to glorify the Lord in all we do. Strive to be who God created you to be, and not a slave to something of this world. Strive to live a life that points back to Him in all things.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

Galatians 1:10 – Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.

Be Present

As a millennial and someone on Instagram in today’s society – we love trying new things, going to cute coffee shops and finding the perfect aesthetic. We may deny it – but it’s now kind of in our nature. In the midst of these absolutely wonderful, life-giving and adventurous things – I pray we remember who we are with, ask them hard questions, take the time to soak in that $5 cup of coffee, and really admire the sunset and thank the one Who created it in addition to snapping a photo of it – because, sunsets. I recently discovered that being present is a choice. You can so easily let the time pass being soaked up in your phone – God desires so much more to life for us – life abundant and to the very fullest.

Colossians 4:5-6 Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.

Romans 12:2 – Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Speak Sincerely and Honestly

Real talk here: I sometimes used to get self-conscious about how “overly” nice I seem at times, but I have learned that is part of how I was created by our Maker. Speak from the heart, speak your true emotions, be real, invite someone in, break down those walls. For example, I love details, hearing how God is working in your life, and encouraging others – so you may get random texts from me, or one too many replies to an Instagram story because I am overjoyed for you. God delights in the desires of our hearts. He made us wonderfully. He made us to be truthful, pure, commendable and lovely. Let’s honor Him together and lift one another up because life is tough, man.

Proverbs 15:23 – A person finds joy in giving an apt reply— and how good is a timely word!

Proverbs 12:18 – Some people make cutting remarks, but the words of the wise bring healing.
