When To Take A Step Back

Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke on you and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and my load is not hard to carry.”

There are many times during my day when I add to my calendar. The list of “what to get done” gets longer and longer. I am constantly on the move, almost never getting any time to just sit and relax. I am known to always say 'yes'. The more I do, the happier I feel because I feel as if I am making a difference. However, what do I do when everything piling up becomes too much for me?

Let me tell you…

YOU GO TO GOD!

It is easy to go to God when times are tough, when you feel like a burden, or someone is sick… but did you know you can also go to him when you feel like you have too much to do? God wants you to feel at peace; nowhere in the Bible does it say we should be stressed and overload ourselves with work. NOWHERE.

If you are anything like me, you like to do a lot for others. You feel better when you make someone else feel better, and that's great but, you also have to give some time for yourself. Sometimes it can be hard to know when to take a step back because you are doing so much, but there are signs that you need to stop and go to God. For me some of those things are:

  • When I become irritated easily with others
  • When I find myself not getting enough sleep or too much sleep
  • When work becomes hard to do
  • When I find myself skipping Bible time to get something else done
  • Or even when worship music feels too long

If you have ever felt like this, or something similar to this then… YOU NEED TO TAKE A STEP BACK! You need to go to God. God gives us rest, peace, hope and so so much more. I have heard a lot of people say “the more you do, the better you are.” Why is that? Doesn’t it say in the Bible that God is our father; He is the one who will carry our burdens; He is the one who is king of all kings? We will never be as good as God. However, God will always be enough for us. I have been trying to learn how to take steps back. When things seem to pile up and become stressful, that's when I know it is time to give it all to God. How might we do that? Well we could:

  • Spend some time reading the Bible (reading about the truth)
  • Spend some time worshipping
  • Go on a walk and talk to God
  • Go on a coffee date with someone and read scriptures together
  • Write God a letter of everything you need to let go of

There are many options to not only grow closer to God, but to know that God is there. If you are stressed about your future or drowning in your past; if you are carrying too much or feel as if you are alone, then let me just tell you - God has called you enough. He has a plan for you, and it will always be the best plan. Take a moment and thank God for His goodness and let him know you are not giving up yet. Also, take a moment and congratulate yourself. Do you see how far you have come!? I am so proud of you, and even if I don’t know you, I know God knows you and has a master plan for you. He called you his own. He wanted you from the very beginning; don’t forget that. He loves you... SOOO much. He wants you to go to Him. He wants to give you rest. You are no burden to Him. You never could be. He wants to hear from you (good or bad), and He just wants to have a relationship with you. So it might be time to step back and to let God be in control. As hard as it can be, let go and let God. See what he can do for you.

1 Peter 5:7 “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”

James 1:2-4 “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”

Psalm 46:10-11 “ Let go of your concerns! Then you will know that I am God. I rule the nations. I rule the earth. The LORD of Armies is with us. The God of Jacob is our stronghold.”

John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, nor let it fear.”
